Salades

What does the legend say ?

Legend tells how, in 1383, French king Charles VI called Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, to help the besieged Earl of Flanders.

Philip the Bold mustered a 1000-man army and decided to tithe on wild mustard merchants income to finance it. They battled and won. When coming back to Dijon, Philip the Bold was exclaiming “Moult me tarde de rentrer à Dijon’’ (I’m impatient to go back), as embroidered afterwards on the soldiers flag.

On the way back to Dijon, the flag was flying in the wind and the word “me” deadened. Dijon’s inhabitants could see the flag from far away and cried out “mustard soldiers are coming back”. Grateful, Philip the Bold allowed wild mustard farmers to become mustard producers and to display Burgundy’s coat of arms on their products.
